Incorporating a Workout Routine when you’re Feeling Tired, Unmotivated and Busy
As a busy mom juggling motherhood and a career, I find it really difficult to find the energy and motivation to implement a consistent workout routine. But it is so important to prioritize this form of self-care and maintain our health, even when we’re overwhelmed with busy schedules.
I know the feeling of wanting to use whatever free time comes up during the day to simply lie down and do nothing. There are days when I’ll feel so consumed and drained by all of my responsibilities that winding down with a glass of wine and a nice TV show sounds so much more appealing and appropriate. It’s almost as if we’re demanding too much of ourselves if we try to use the little time we have to challenge our bodies with extra physical activity. But self-care is sometimes doing what you don’t feel like doing. And you will never regret having done it once you’re finished.
I’ve never been and will never be a fitness junkie, but I really do admire those who love breaking a sweat every day. I have friends who cannot go more than two days without working out because they just love how it feels and cannot function without it. For me, I’ve always been someone who enjoys lighter workouts.
If you’re anything like me, you need a little push to get that workout in. Here are some compassionate tips to help you stay motivated and make exercise a part of your daily routine, even when you're feeling tired, unmotivated, and busy.
1. Start small
Begin by setting realistic goals that are achievable within your current lifestyle. Starting with short workouts or even just 10 minutes of exercise each day can make a difference in boosting your energy and mood. Gradually increase the duration and intensity as you build momentum.
2. Find activities you enjoy
Look for physical activities that you genuinely enjoy doing and make exercising feel less like a chore. Whether it's dancing, yoga, cycling, or going for walks with your children — find something that excites you and fits into your daily routine.
3. Schedule it in
Treat your workout as an important appointment by scheduling it into your calendar. Set aside dedicated time each day or week specifically for exercise, just like you would for any other commitment. This will make you more likely to follow through with it. Making a tracker and taping it to your refrigerator for all family members and friends to see might be just what you need to help you stay on track.
4. Break it up
If finding a continuous block of time for exercise seems impossible, break up your workouts into shorter bursts throughout the day. For example, take a brisk walk during your lunch break or do quick exercises in between household duties. You can even get a little workout in while waiting for your food to cook.
5. Mix it up
Keep your workouts interesting by trying different activities. Variety will help prevent boredom and maintain your motivation. From playing tennis to swimming and hiking, there’s something for everyone.
6. Involve your children
If possible, include your children in your workouts. Try intuitive dancing with them! This is just dancing to the music intuitively, and there’s no right or wrong. It’s so freeing, healthy and fun. Involving your children in workouts not only allows you to spend quality time together but also sets a positive example of the importance of staying active and taking care of yourself.
7. Prioritize self-care
Remember that taking care of yourself is essential for both your physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise can boost energy levels, reduce stress, improve mood, and increase productivity in other areas of life. Almost every aspect of your health benefits from it.
8. Seek support
Reach out to other moms who are also trying to maintain an active lifestyle while balancing motherhood and career commitments. You can even make a WhatsApp group where everyone shares their experiences and tips. Having members add a daily photo or a timelapse of what their physical activity looked like that day adds an extra bit of accountability. Also, checking in regularly with someone can provide motivation and support on days when you're feeling less motivated.
Not every workout needs to be intense or perfect. On days when fatigue or lack of motivation is present, give yourself permission for lighter workouts or restorative activities like stretching or meditation. Every little step counts towards creating a healthier lifestyle. Incorporating a workout routine may require some adjustments in your daily schedule, but investing in your health is totally worth it. Be kind to yourself on days when motivation is low or when unexpected challenges arise – it's all part of the journey towards balancing motherhood, career, and personal well-being. You got this!
